Create Your First Analysis: New Database Connection

In this tutorial, we will show you how to create your first Analysis step-by-step. The data source that you will be using is: Insurance (Download the Excel file HERE).

ODBC and OLEDB databases (e.g. MS SQL Server, Oracle, Excel) can be connected to Smart-eVision pages in Data Management. All databases can be connected and managed here. Table schema from databases can also be imported for page designing.

How to Connect New Database

  1. Click the gear button on the top right corner to enter System Management. Select Data Management to connect to a data source. This is where you manage all your database sources. Normally, you would connect to your company's database. In this tutorial, we will connect to an Excel file. Right click on the Data Sources folder and select New Database.

  2. On the left side of the New Connection dialog box, it displays all the database types that can be connected. Select the database type: OleDB and enter a conncection name. Then, click the tools button beside Connection String to open Connection Editor.

  3. Choose Excel as the Driver and enter its File Path, where you placed the Excel file. Click Test to confirm whether Smart eVision can connect to the Excel file. If it is successfully connected, click OK. Now, you have successfully connected your data source. (If you haven't downloaded the Excel file, here it is: Insurance)

  4. In the Data Management tab, click on the data source that you have just connected and select Import Tables and Relations. Click Load to load all tables.

To choose more than one table, hold the CTRL button and select the desired tables with your mouse. In this tutorial, we will select the two tables indicated in the image below. If you want to select all tables, click the Select button to select all. Finally, click OK to finish importing and database connection is complete.
